Waltrap is the fabric part of a horse’s outfit that protects the back from sweat and sliding saddles. In addition to functional characteristics, it has decorating functions. It’s easy to sew a saddlebag, especially if you are creative and like unusual things. And you can do it yourself.
What is wraprap
Probably the first lap-top in the history of human-horse interaction was the folded blanket of a nomad warrior. With the development of horse-drawn ammunition, the shape of the saddle pillow changed. Now the saddle pillow (wrap) can be rectangular, square or figured.It is recommended to use it with every participation of the horse in competitions and during daily walks. The lining is laid on the back of the horse, placed on top of the sweatshop and then the saddle.
Professional jockeys know that no matter how the saddle is correctly selected, it is impossible to do without a saddle strap and a sweatshirt. During an hour of intense work, the horse loses 10-15 liters of sweat. This highly active salt solution negatively affects the skin of ammunition and destroys it, so the functions of the lining under the saddle are:
- Protecting saddle skin from sweat
- protect the back of the animal from slipping and the weight of the rider;
- leveling irregularities;
- cooling the back while moving;
- decorating a horse.
Did you know? Valtrap should correspond not only to the saddle, but also to the shape of the horse’s back. The synonymous name of the product is cheprak, a saddle pillow.
Valtrap can be made of two-layer or multilayer fabrics. Distinguish between winter and summer varieties. Winter trim with fur. In their manufacture, sheepskin or other dense materials are used. In summer, linen, calico or cotton fabrics are used. A quality product does not slip on the skin and does not fold under the saddle.
Competitive - designed for mounting under the saddle for equestrian competitions (show jumping). The right shape of the seat cushion can really enhance your overall result. It is performed in the form of a drop, i.e., it repeats the shape of the saddle. It is completed with special loops or flypapers for fastening to a saddle.
Dressage - Used for dressage saddles. It features a square shape. Length and placement are adjustable due to elongated wings. It can also be used for everyday use. For dressage, a wide selection of design and decoration styles is available.
Did you know? A study of the ability of different tissues to dissipate heat using a laser thermometer found that fleece copes best with this. But felt and dense woven fabrics do not dissipate heat well. They also accumulate a lot of dirt and poorly conduct air.
The most elegant lap-top is in the form of a trefoil. It can be used for competitive or universal saddle. The shamrock is smaller than a classic dressage saddle pillow. It covers part of the withers (connection of the back and neck) and then continues under the saddle. Its lateral length is almost 2 times longer than dressage.
How to use
The saddle strap is mounted on the back to absorb sweat, soften the saddle and protect the back. On each side there are belts for girth and fastening to the saddle.
The left edge fits into the junction of the neck and back of the horse. Spread the mane that has fallen under the saddle pillow. Lay on top a sweatshirt or a saddle immediately. The cinch is threaded into special straps.
Important! Waltrap should be washed after each use. Old sweat will cause skin irritation if you use the product without washing.
- the inner surface is made of mesh fabric to allow air movement and sweat to dry out.This part should cool the back;
- the outer surface should be such as to prevent slipping and absorb bumps;
- a specific pattern (diamond-shaped) provides a high degree of amortization;
- strong holders are provided in order to fix the seat and prevent displacement;
- it should not be thinner than 20 mm.
Sewing a saddle-strap at home is not difficult. To do this, it is enough to have a desire, choose the right material, cut the fabric and sew.
One of the most common materials used today is fleece. Natural fleece provides greater cushioning, but synthetic fleece is more durable and easy to care for.
A key property of felt scraps is the ability of the material to absorb sweat. Felt is considered an excellent shock absorber, which helps to reduce the pressure exerted on the horse’s back.
Waterproof and easy-to-wash neoprene jackets are usually decorated on the inside with a mesh that promotes good air circulation and breathability. They also provide good cushioning and reduce seat slip.
The gel perfectly distributes weight and absorbs heartbeat. In addition, it creates more comfort for the horse than other materials. Such a product is heavier in weight and more expensive, but it is the best choice for the participants of the races.
Valtrap consists of 3 layers: between the upper and lower there is a layer of filler. The filler may be a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber. For edging around the edges you will need a special braid or belt tape. Width - about 3 cm, length - about 1.5 m. Fasteners will need Velcro. Their size is 32–35 cm.
Important! Too thick or too thin a leopard can harm the horse’s back, so make sure its thickness is about 20–25 mm. The thickness is controlled by the number of layers of filler.
If you have prepared materials, scissors and a sewing machine, the sewing sequence will be as follows:
- Take the product, which serves as a sample, and make a pattern according to its size. You can also remove patterns from your horse.
- Transfer the pattern to the fabric, you will get 3 pieces of fabric: external, internal and filler.
- To make the filler last longer, sew it with a large cage over the entire area.
- Connect all three parts together and sweep.
- Sew them along the perimeter.
- Mark the lines of the cage (for a cushioning effect) and sew a t-shirt with the middle cage.
- Sew the hem around the edge of the product.
- Sew the straps and strap on the sides to fasten the girth (spacer).
The decision to take measurements from a horse is only partly good: the size of a horse changes throughout its life, so even a perfectly made product will cease to be like that after some time.
The idea of making a do-it-yourself wrap-around is not necessarily based on the assumption of savings on a high-quality industrial product. This may be a desire to implement your own creative approach and decorate your favorite. And if you like it, feel free to proceed with the implementation.
